Feasibility study on animal welfare labelling and establishing a Community Reference Centre for Animal Protection and Welfare

Project summary:
In recent years, certification schemes have been widely introduced into the European agrifood sector. The Community Action Plan on the Protection and Welfare of Animals 2006 – 2010 highlights the importance of consumer information as part of a comprehensive communication strategy on animal welfare. Enabling consumers to make informed purchasing decisions has the potential to give an economic incentive to industry to improve the welfare of animals. The Directorate-General for Health and Consumers of the European Commission commissioned this study to assess the feasibility of different options for indicating animal welfare related information on products of animal origin and for establishing a Community Reference Centre for Animal Protection and Welfare.
